BRATTON CLOVELLY (or CLEVELLY) is a village and extensive parish, 8 miles west-by-south from the market town of Okehampton, in the Southern division of the county, Lifton hundred, Okehampton union and county court district, rural deanery of Okehampton, and archdeaconry of Totnes, and diocese of Exeter. The church (dedication not known) is a building of stone, in the Early English and later styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and a fine tower with 6 bells, all cast in 1767; the nave is Early Decorated, dating from about 1375; the chancel and base of the tower are Early Englis; the east window is of ancient glass, with the arms of the Barnby family; the window in the east end of the north aisle is now (1883) about to be filled with stained glass as a memorial to Thos. Ellis Manning; the window in the tower is a memorial to Oliver Veale Pengelly, formerly of this parish; the nave will seat 180 persons. The register dates from the year 1555. The living is a rectory, tithes commuted at £460; net yearly income £412, with 140 acres of glebe, rented at £140; gross yearly value £560. with residence, in gift of the Bishop of Exeter, and held since 1865 by Rev. Edward Seymour M.A. of Jesus College, Cambridge. The Bible Christians have three chapels here — one in the village, one at Boasley and one at Rexon Cross. Henry de Bracton, a celebrated lawyer, 1185-1267, author of “De Legibus et Consuetudinibus Angliae,” the best of judicial classics, is supposed to have been born in this parish. Mrs. Manning, who is lady of the manor, and William James Harris esq. J.P. are the principal landowners. The soil is chiefly clay; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. Area 8,316A. 0R. 5P.; rateable value, £3,999; the population in 1881 was 601.
