1866 Post Office Directory

Bratton Clovelly is a village and extensive parish, 9 miles from the market town of Okehampton, in the Southern division of the county, Lifton hundred, Okehampton union and county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Totnes, and diocese of Exeter. The church (dedication not known), is in the Decorated style of the fifteenth century, and has nave, north and south aisles, chancel, and a fine tower with 6 bells. The register dates from 1555. The living is a rectory, tithes commuted at £460, with 161 acres of glebe rented at £140, making the gross annual value about £600, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Exeter, and held by the Rev. Edward Seymour, M.A., of Jesus College, Cambridge. Here is a National School. The Bible Christians have three chapels here. John G. Newton, Esq., and T. E. Manning, Esq., are the principal landowners. Area, 8,316A. 0R. 5P.; population 706.
